Yummy (2020) - Plastic Surgery Nightmares

Holy moly. This movie was absolutely INSANE. I have always been a huge fan of extremely gory, disgusting and appalling movies. I don't really know how you really gain that interest but here we are. Now, I'm not gonna pretend I know everything about European film laws or whatever in regards to what is "too far" or not. But, holy shit. They went all the way with this one. There is no chill. I haven't seen a movie this crazy since A Serbian Film or Martyrs. Seriously. I had been asking for something shocking for so long - and this just came out of nowhere. And it's not some low budget bullshit either. I never really thought I was much of zombie movie fan, but the zombie movies in the last few years seem to be way better than a lot of the other horror movies. This will be Belgium's first zombie horror movie ever. Crazy! What's even crazier to me is that they label it as a horror-comedy. I usually am the first person to love some weird dark and twisted humour, but the comedy is way over my head here. I mean, I was smiling and laughing but purely out of complete discomfort. I just finished the movie and all my muscles hurt from how tense I was during the whole movie. This movie could only exist on Shudder. I don't think the normal world can handle it. Now unlike other EXTREME gore movies like Serbian Film, Salo or even just the I Spit On Your Grave series, I am glad this movie doesn't REALLY push extremely sensitive boundaries (ie sexual violence/child violence/etc). It makes it a bit more societally accessible and probably saves the crew from legal charges like many movies on that level. There are so many scenes that build up casually. I kept thinking to myself, "No they're not gonna do that..." and then it happens and it's SO GROSS. Like worse than you can predict. The movie centers around a young couple who travel to some sketchy, experimental, illegal Eastern European plastic surgery center. The woman is simply looking for a breast reduction, but I suppose it's inferred that the couple doesn't really have any money - so that's how they end up there. But of course, there is some weird human experimentation happening there - just waiting to go wrong. There's always gotta be some Patient X who is all fucked up and always gets loose because the staff are stupid and careless. The obvious message to be learned from the movie is obviously to stay away from illegitimate hospitals. Or maybe it's a commentary on the plastic surgery industry as a whole. All the victims in the movie have had some sort of procedure done - and done wrong. The creativity and variety of situations, victims and deaths deserves extra credit. There is some shit that goes on that I have not seen done in any movies before - and it's done extremely well. The acting is actually really great - even though the husband is the worst character EVER. I guess it adds some humanity to the group. It's SO gross. It's SO entertaining from start to finish. The movie also avoids the shaky camera action that usually exists in zombie movies. So it saves us from the regular motion sickness. If you can handle gore - this movie is incredible. It's brand new, but I think it will stick around and be a movie people remember.
