Okay I really didn't wanna write this review. This was one of those things I hoped someone else would pick up - but alas, here we are. When I first saw Paranormal Activity, it was exactly 2007. So I would have been in my freshman year of high school. And I saw it across the street from my highschool. I can't remember who I saw it with. But I am positive that night my parents were out of town. My sister might've been home - don't remember. I remember waiting for the last bus from the movie theatre terminal. We went late - around 9, so the movie would've let out at about 11. And I remember even waiting for the bus and I was fucking mortified. Even when I arrived home I was so scared I could barely sleep. What do I compare this movie to? I would say Blair Witch Project. The movie is terrifying because they do the same thing where they try to pretend it's a legitimate film by filming with a video-camera. The reason I would say it's similar to Blair Witch is because the scares are similar. They construct the movie to be just a couple filming a night. Then it continues to more nights after they have experienced "paranormal activity". The way they decided to film this move in particular is reminiscent of REC or Cloverfield or movies that were similar. They want to give you a first person perspective so it feels much more real. And you know what? It does feel real. I used to watch a TV show on YTV when I was even younger than this called "Fear". "Fear" had the same kind of concept where they would stay over night in haunted places and have their mediocre film gear record their experiences. So, no matter what - to me this is scary. They can pull as many fake pranks, screams, noises, leg pulls, etc. - and I will fall for it every time. No matter how low budget - the film still pulls off what I think it aimed for. The scare scenes are still scary. And they still make the audience feel as though it could happen to them. Successful movie to me. It's not rewatchable, but it's definitely worth the first watch.
