The Host ( 괴물) (2006) - Sea Alien Dinosaur Monster?

Writer's picture: Sara MohanSara Mohan

I've been on a hard Korean thriller kick lately. I had heard of The Host years ago but never watched it. It's actually quite highly rated on most platforms so I figured it would be definitely worth while. Here's the thing. It MIGHT be. I can get quickly turned off by a movie. I'm judgemental and of course my opinion is just my opinion. So this is a Bong Joon-Ho movie. After I saw Parasite I swear it was one of the best movies I've ever seen. You couldn't convince me this is the same creator. I mean unless I truly grazed over this movie. There is absolutely no character development. He tried to sort of build some family orientated story, but it was really confusing from the get go. Within about 20 minutes the action already starts, so you don't have time to get to know the characters and their motives and what not. We begin with some morticians stupidly pouring Formaldehyde down the drains that go into the local river. No real reason. One of the morticians just was an asshole and was particular about dust on the bottles so made the other guy pour them all down the drain. Of course, it goes into the river. And as easily predicted, it starts to mutate the wildlife in the river. Great premise really. But it doesn't take 15 minutes before out of no where a giant monster appears in the water. Cool. Thrilling, yes. All of a sudden this mutated sea creature is running on land like a dinosaur. Firstly the CGI is absolutely TERRIBLE. JUST BRUTAL. Some of the worst I've seen. But beyond this, the creature barely resembles something that would come out of the river. It doesn't have fins, it can run on land, it has like six mouths. It just doesn't make sense. I mean yeah it's alien like and would be scary if we weren't necessarily waiting for it to be like a water creature. It just doesn't line up. So it starts running around, eating people left right and center, and it can breathe on land just fine. So the idea of the leaked formaldehyde causing a fish from the river to mutate into something huge and terrifying really made no sense. It's more of an alien than anything. Followed by lots of screaming, lots of running, lots of shooting towards it (and it is seemingly impossible to defeat of course right.) Doesn't even need water to breathe. But also it can swim perfectly. I don't know. They lost me as soon as the creature came out of the water. Just stupid. Poorly executed and it looks even stupider. But it's highly rated? Did I miss something? Let me know... I'd skip this one. Watch Parasite though!
