The Conjuring was the beginning of a multitude of similar films that would follow with very similar style. It follows a familiar rhetoric, jump scare, psychological thrill that basically took over the 2000s and 2010s for the genre. I was born in 1992. I think that the Conjuring, (along with others like The Ring, etc.) may be one of the horror movies of my generation. I watched many classic horror movies earlier on in my life, but I don't necessarily include them to be "horror movies of my time". I do find many other movies superior, but I suppose they're not movies of my generation. It's interesting for me and being the exact age I am, that i should be naturally subjected to the worst possible movies maybe of all time. I live in a time where filmmaking is much easier to accomplish. Not to say it's an easy task to make a film but it's definitely more accessible. And with that, maybe just my opinoin, many bad movies have been made. They make it to Shudder or Netflix or Amozon or whatever. Seemingly passing by a very low standard. Truly, i spend half my movie watching time in quarentine especially, starting terrible movies, trying to give them a chance, and then having to shut them off.
I saw this movie when I was about 21? In some circumstance I was up north near my parents house with my father. And we thought, sure why not - let's go. And you know what... especially between my father and I - we can pretty much take any spook. But this movie really scared both of us in the theatres.
I have watched it multiple times since and honestly - nothing hits just the same. When the jump scares have the volume down, the screams are even quieter, and even the effects seem somehow less interesting when you re-watch it. So maybe, keeping in mind all the positives of the movie, it is a film not worth watching again.
For a film set in 1970, the costuming is a little odd. It is somehow very modern. The house however, also isn't set towards 1970 - but really just an old, old house that no ever bothered to clean. We understand that the family had bought the house from an auction - which has become a token storyline for a lot of newer horror movies. People are buying the houses and they do not understand the history. And SURPRISE - the house is haunted. AND YOU HAVE FIVE YOUNG GIRL. It's enjoyable for The Conjuring - but this storyline follows through Insidious and other movies within the franchise. Which truly became successful.
As far as The Conjuring goes, I think it really served it's purpose. It's "based around true events". Maybe they didn't know that all the sequels would follow. But still it's definitely a borrowed storyline. As much as I do enjoy this movie - I can recognize that it's not original. It's done well - for the first hour. Then they really had to sacrifice a lot of quality to round up a finale for the story. They have really amazing actors that have to act beneath their talent to finish the movie. Or at least that's how it seems to me. It's not to say that there are some amazing scenes that truly spooked me. And I really don't wanna tear the movie apart. But it definitely followed behind some awful 2000s garbage. I wouldn't skip it - I think it's worth watching. But I think it's worth a little bit less credit than it has received.
