I'm not necessarily sure that I want to broaden the criteria for reviews on this site to include dramas like this one, but I felt bad for not posting for a couple of days. It was a Shudder exclusive so I figured it had some kind of horror element to it, but I was mistaken. That doesn't mean that this movie wasn't great. I guess I'll test out a little bit of a new style for this one.
This movie is perfectly paced and acted. It wasn't too long and wasn't full of useless dialogue. I can appreciate that in a movie. The movie is about an ex-con, (the actor is gorgeous by the way what the hell) who starts living at a hotel ran by a mother and a daughter. There isn't too much of a story, it's quite a short movie.
It's almost as though you could play this off as a romance. But it's not a love story. It's about a criminal who is trying his best to move on with his life. It doesn't necessarily reveal what crime he was incarcerated for. He begins living at the hotel and getting to know this girl and her mother. I say the movie is a romance because it is completely platonic love. It's about doing the right thing and taking care of the people around you no matter what. It's about relearning to trust even the most unlikely of characters. Danny's (Roland Moller) character has a hard outer shell and is determined to stay out of trouble. He is softened by the daughter of the hotel owner, Clara. After she faces a brutal assault, abandonment from her father, and living with a single mother who is fairly preoccupied - she is able to find safeness and refuge in Danny. It's a slow burn for sure, but it's absolutely beautiful to watch. It's hard to stay out of trouble when you have been failed by justice or when the world works out in ways you can't understand.
