BLACK LIVES MATTER

Writer's picture: Sara MohanSara Mohan

In the midst of the world right now I still find it challenging to take my mind off of the political climate currently. I never really find myself as much of a political person, but I know that this cause is not only important but mandatory. So what can my dumb little blog do? Not a lot. But here are my favourite Black Horror movies. I'm sure I will miss tonnes so comment and let me know what I missed. Here are my Top 5. I am trying to avoid the movies that center around black culture (religious, etc) as a racist way of creating horror, or casting black people as "the horror" just as blackness itself. There are many movies like Night of the Living Dead, who cast Black characters but as the demon. Or movies that have the first person to die being a Black person. There is many more. My stupid ignorant white mind needs to do more research. 1. Us (2019)

2. Get Out

3. Tales From the Hood (1995)

4. Sugar Hill (1974)

5. Candyman (1995)

Notable Strong Black Characters in Horror off the top of my stupid head: Miranda Gray (Halle Barry) - Gothika Sue Ann/Ma (Octivia Spencer) - Mama Eddie Baker (Taye Digg) - House on a Haunted Hill Maggie Bess (Rah Digga) - Thirteen Ghosts Selena (Naomi Harris) - 28 Days Later Kia Waterson (Kelly Rowland) - Freddy vs. Jason Brent Norton (Andre Bragher) - The Mist David Tapp (Donald Glover) - Saw Richard Hallorann (Scatman Crothers) - The Shining AMOUNGST MANY OTHER I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW HORROR SHOULD NOT JUST BE WHITE PEOPLE. BLACK PEOPLE HAVE PLAYED VITAL ROLES SINCE THE BEGINNING. Also personal note to D.B. Woodside for being a bad ass as Principal Wood in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Very near and dear to my heart. He was the son of a vampire slayer and he trained himself as a fighter to fight demons and protect Sunnydale. LOVE HIM. And also carrying on his power into his own series, Lucifer.
