Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) - Had me at Englund

Writer's picture: Sara MohanSara Mohan

I don't know how this missed my radar but I am completely ashamed that it took me until now to see this movie. This is an absolute masterpiece. If you aren't already sold on Zelda Rubinstein (Poltergeist), Scott Wilson (Walking Dead), or ROBERT FUCKING ENGLUND (Nightmare on Elm Street) - then I don't know how you could ever be pleased. It's a mockumentary. And I mean mockumentary meaning it's not making fun of it but it's basically not a real documentary. Like technically Blair Witch is a mockumentary. It's not "found footage" because I think the idea is the filmmakers aren't exactly agreeing or interested in putting out the footage that they have collected. The reason for me that made me unsure at first, was that it basically like a serial killer let a documentary crew follow him around and film all his plans for murdering a bunch of teenagers. I mean, the reasons are fairly obvious why this wouldn't make sense. They could just turn him in. Easily. With evidence. Or if they don't, then they are automatically accomplices to multiple murders. It's a lose/lose basically. It doesn't exactly explain how or why they got permission from Leslie (the serial killer subject of this mockumentary). Which I think takes away from the legitimacy a little bit. Even though it's obviously just make-believe. But I imagine any master killer wouldn't want to give away all the tips and tricks of the trade? Right? The writing is absolutely brilliant. It's poking fun at the horror genre obviously. Picking out each thing that is repeated in multiple slasher movies. Like weapons breaking, windows being locked, typical behaviors of teenagers. Where/how people defend themselves. But they make it smart because the Leslie Vernon character has basically studied all these serial killers to perfectly plan out a multiple homicide all in one night just like in the movies. I wouldn't call it a comedy/horror by any means, but I was laughing the whole time. It's incredibly clever and brilliantly acted. Definitely 9/10 stars if not 10/10. You can make me smile just by showing me Robert Englund's beautiful face. This is a nice easy watch, it's not too gory. It's short and to the point and never a dull moment.
